Disagreement Among Groundhogs

Phil says six more weeks of winter; Malverne Mel agrees; Staten Island Chuck is an optimist.

Here in Plainview, the winter weather has been simply delightful. Except for that one brief January weekend whose snow has long since melted, temperatures on Long Island have been, well, spring-like.

But it just wouldn't be Feb. 2 without hearing the juicy details from far away Punxsutawney and the groundhogs from Malverne and the Staten Island Zoo.

So, as promised, here are the forecasts offered by those prickly little rodents whose seasonal prognostications were at polar opposites Thursday.

Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil "saw" his shadow and predicted six more weeks of winter. The temperature in Gobbler's Knob was approaching 60 today. Read about it here at Wrentham, MA Patch.

Meanwhile, Staten Island Chuck (who bit Mayor Bloomberg two years ago) forecast an early spring and a Giants Super Bowl victory on Sunday. Read about it here at the Huffington Post. His Honor was unhurt today.

But, Long Island's own Malverne Mel called for six more weeks of winter. He did this on a mild morning on the South Shore. See the Patch video here.

The NWS forecast for Plainview and the New York Metropolitan area the week is for above normal temperatures through the weekend and beyond with no snow in sight.

I don't trust Malverne Mel as much as I trust the hyacinths I saw blooming (!) today in my neighbor's yard.
