Latest Deception Burglary Targets Bethpage Man, 84

Man tricks homeowner into entering house; money, jewelry disappear.

Nassau County Detectives are reporting the latest in a series of deception buglaries that target elderly homeowners, this one in Bethpage.

Eighth Squad Detectives said an 84-year-old man answered a knock on his door Wednesday afternoon and was met by a suspect who claimed to be buying a home directly behind the victim's.

The elderly man invited the suspect in and spent 5-10 minutes together discussing the neighborhood, all the while looking out the victim's back window toward the yard, police said.

When the intruder left, the victim received a phone call from a neighbor who reported that a man fitting the same description as the intruder had knocked on her front door. He was described as a white male, about 5’10,” with a stocky build, wearing a black jacket with a gray fur collar.

That woman didn't answer the knock and observed the intruder get into a vehicle with New Jersey license plates and drive off.

The elderly man looked around his home and discovered assorted jewelry and money had been taken.

Police were alerted and a manhunt ensued. Police from the Eighth Precinct decended on the area off Stewart Avenue and canvassed the local streets. A police helicopter was launched and was heard circling in the vicinity, witnesses said.

It is not clear whether anyone else was involved with the intruder. A series of deception burglaries have been reported around Nassau County. The most infamous involve two women: one who distracts the elderly homeowner as the other pillages the home. In previous cases, two men are thought to be involved with the women.

Detectives request anyone with information regarding this crime to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-877-244-TIPS. Police say all callers will remain anonymous.
