Plainview Doctor Offers Help to Veterans

During November, the month of , Plainview Dr. Dorit Ben-Moha will match all insurance co-payments from active duty and non-active duty military personnel at her private practice with a donation to Operation Homefront.

“Many veterans shy away from going to the doctor, said Dr. Ben-Moha, an internist and Plainview physician since 1999. "Many are on limited incomes and are so filled with pride that they don’t want to admit that something might be wrong. My heart goes out to them.

Ben-Moha, who is president of the medical staff at , said it's important for veterans to be screened for TBI – traumatic brain injury- and stress disorders and feels her program is one way to raise awareness.

“It’s my hope that by matching the co-pay with a donation to a charity that provides such hands on assistance, I can encourage some veterans who have not sought out medical care to do so," she said. "It’s important to at least have an annual physical and by connecting it with Veteran’s Day- it’s a great reminder.”

"Dr. Ben-Moha's matching program will help us assist more veterans," said Alison La Ferlita, Chapter President of Operation Homefront, Tri-State. "Ninety-five cents of each dollar of total revenue donated to Operation Homefront goes directly to programs that impact veterans. Her effort to support our veterans is admirable and a true added value to the system."

Since opening her private practice in 1999, Dr. Ben-Moha has served as a primary-care physician for the public as well as many doctors and nurses. She says she is devoted to treating mentally and physically challenged adults and is a driving force in helping Long Islanders learn to make healthy lifestyle choices.

As with the veterans' program this month, Ben-Moha said she believes in "highly personalized care," individual attention, and that "good medicine requires so much more than treating a symptom."

Instead, she treats the whole patient, taking the time to provide each person the individual attention needed to achieve optimum health, Ben-Moha said.

She is affiliated with and President of the Medical Staff at Plainview Hospital and serves on its pharmaceutical and wellness committees. Active in her community, Dr. Dorit was recognized in 2010 by the , which held the 7th Annual in her honor.

Operation Homefront leads more than 4,500 volunteers across 29 chapters and has met more than 267,000 needs since 2002. Nationally rated a four-star charity by watchdog Charity Navigator, 95 cents of each dollar of total revenue donated to Operation Homefront goes to programs.
