I really don't see anything special about this intersection that should make it dangerous. It seems to me that the problem is careless driving and speeding. I would like to read about how a third car came into this accident. Failure to maintain a distance? Not watching carefully? Racing to get through a light?

Ever since they added the traffic cams, more people are rushing to get through the intersection before the light changes. I used to think the cams were a good idea but I had to fight a ticket when the cam caught me in the intersection (same one). I got caught because the car in front of me stopped while he/she proceeded through the intersection trying to make up their mind if they should enter the gas station or not. I left plenty of room between cars, leaving me in the intersection. I think there was a study on the use of cams and of effective they were in telling the whole story. In my case I lost because the picture did not back up my story conclusively as the Judge said. Come one how is a stupid cam going to show indecision.

link to a study shows that rear end crashes actually increased after the cams were installed.

This accident looks like a car making a right turn running into a car making a left turn. Probably people rushing to get through the intersection and not paying attention to what the other driver is doing.

I'm with you, Simba. I think the traffic cams are horrible ideas on all levels, including civil rights ones. But the practical effect has been people racing to beat the system and making bad decisions in the process.

I agree with both you & Simba. The traffic cams are viewed by someone in Arizona. These people do not have a clue about our intersections & they get part of the money generated from the tickets. The honest person who is following the rules of driver education & keeps an eye out for all traffic is the one that gets the ticket. The people that are racing to beat the system & make the bad decisions, sometimes don't pay the fee! It is a violation of civil rights but in Nassau County, there isn't a chance that someone will fight it & win.

Joe: And what about the people going through lights already red where there are no cameras at all? What system are they trying to beat? Or those making right turns from the left lane, or left turns from the right lane? I think your best comment is that people are making bad decisions.

People just do what they want to do and if a law is not practical for them, they just ignore it. If they need to run a light, stop sign, text or talk on a phone, they do it. I’m not a big fan of the cameras, but something needs to be done. It’s amazing how many people I see on my short drive to/from Hicksville every day talking on their phone or texting. Just wait for the next generation of drivers. After watching Mommy and Daddy ignore laws…

Also, a friend of mine just received one of the red light camera tickets. He told me it also indicated the speed he was traveling. I’m wondering how they captured his speed.

Let's face it, there isn't enough law enforcement to go around. So the lack of enforcement is critical. Who's fault is it, the Police union for getting their contracts and pensions passed, the previous politicians that didn't care what happened over the long term because it would not cause any problems in their term, or us residents were very happy when the county seemed to have low crime rate and we were happy to the Police what they wanted. It's probably all three, what the solution is, I don't have a clue, except that we will have breakdowns in service. In my opinion we can't keep up.
