Plainview VA Closed; Services Moved to East Meadow

Veterans Services were housed in the former Nassau County Office complex on Old Country Road.

Without much advance notice, the Veterans Administration service agency and VA Clinic has left its long-time home in Plainview.

The VA center, which had been located at the former Nassau County Office complex on Old Country Road for decades, has been moved to East Meadow, veterans said. The move became official on April 8.

The new Veterans Center is located in the Nassau University Medical Center's Building Q.  It is equipped with a modern triage room, 14 exam rooms and doctors on hand. They will also have a counselor from the vet’s center available on site.

The 11,000 square-foot building has been in the planning stages for 14 years now, officials said, and replaces the smaller aging Plainview facility. At a dedication ceremony recently, County Executive Edward Mangano described the Plainview clinic as “a ramshackle veterans center..."

Costs of $3 million to complete the building were approved by the Nassau County Legislature. Finishing touches were completed only a few days before the opening.

NUMC is the stand-alone skyscraper on Hempstead Turnpike just east of Eisenhower Park and visible for miles around. It is located a short distance west of the Wantagh Parkway.

Veterans can enter the UMC  building from Hempstead Turnpike at the traffic light to the Emergency department and Medical Examiner's office. Just past the Medical Examiner's building is the new VA center, in Building Q, said Joseph Slattery, president of the Nassau County United Veterans Organization, representing  31 independent veterans organizations affecting over 100,000 Nassau veterans.

Free Parking is on the right in a lot reserved for veterans.
