Police: TOBAY Beach Victim Died of Natural Causes

Police confirm that victim found New Year's Day on town beach died of heart attack.

Nassau County Police and medical personnel have determined that the man who was found on Tobay beach on New Year's Day died of natural causes.

The victim, who police did not identify, died of an apparent heart attack, Nassau Police said Monday. The man's body was found on Tobay Beach that windspwept Sunday afternoon by another man who was walking along the deserted stretch of beach front. The oceanfront beach is a popular spot for walkers and joggers, even in winter.

Police from the Seventh Precinct were called to the scene about 1 p.m. Jan. 1 and commenced an investigation. The story made headlines at the time because of the recent string of homicides at nearby Gilgo Beach.

Nassau police said on Monday that there is no connection to the man's death and the Gilgo Beach slayings.

Over the last year, police have discovered the bodies of 11 victims along Ocean Parkway, including the remains of Shannon Gilbert, a 24-year old New Jersey escort whose discovery launched the search more than a year ago. Police believe the other 10 victims were the victims of a serial killer. Gilbert's death is believed to be accidental.

Tobay is the oceanfront beach on the Atlantic owned by the Town of Oyster Bay. It lies on Jones Beach Island to the west of Gilgo Beach and to the east of Jones Beach State Park.
