Town Parking Garage at Hicksville Station Set for March Opening

Parking near the station will become a little easier when the new structure opens.

The commute to the commute is about to get shorter.

Plainview-area commuters will soon be able to use the new Town of Oyster Bay parking garage, which is slated to open in mid-March, Town official said.

The new four-level parking garage at Newbridge Road at Duffy Avenue in Hicksville is nearing completion. The garage, just one block south of Hicksville's LIRR platform, replaces the former garage closed in 2008 due to structural problems.

That means commuters will have a shorter distance to traverse between parking their cars and reaching Hicksville Station. When the old garage, with its cracked support beams, was deemed unsafe, the town made agreements with the nearby Sears and Broadway malls to allow commuters to park in their lots. Shuttle buses were provided at rush hours to and from the temporary lots.

While those temporary lots are in sight of the train station, the new garage is a much quicker walk.

The new garage will have 1,400 parking spaces, the same amount as its predecessor, said Phyllis Barry, a spokeswoman for the Town of Oyster Bay. The new structure appears only two stories high but has two under-ground levels, one street level and a fourth level one floor above the street.

Although the town’s agreement with Sears and the Broadway Mall will cease when the garage is formally opened, Barry said a lease arrangement between the town and a private lot owner is expected to continue. That lot is located at Barclay and Wyckoff streets and provides an additional 65 parking spaces.

The parking garage, built at a cost of nearly $36.4 million, will operate on a first-come-first serve basis, Barry said. But it will be limited to Oyster Bay residents displaying the appropriate town sticker.
