Woman, 62, Chases Burglar From Bethpage Home

It's the second burglary reported in Bethpage Wednesday afternoon. Police do not know whether the crimes are connected.

A feisty 62-year-old woman awakened from an afternoon nap by an intruder screamed and chased the burglar from her Bethpage bedroom, Nassau Police said Thursday.

Detectives with the Eighth Squad said the woman, who was unharmed, heard the intruder inside the home shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday. When the suspect entered the woman's bedroom she began to shout at the man and then chased him out of the house through a back door, police said.

The suspect fled through the backyard of the woman's Millpage Road home, hopped a back fence and disappeared on foot along Stewart Avenue. The woman alerted police.

A manhunt ensued as officers from the Eighth Precinct responded in force looking for the suspect. A helicopter was also used in the search. Police had already been in the vicinity, investigating an earlier deception burglary.

The intruder, who got away with assorted jewelry and cash, remains at large.

The suspect in the home intrusion is described as a white man with a thin build, 5’9-5’11’’ tall, about 28-30 years of age, wearing dark clothing and a black baseball cap with the New York Mets emblem, and blue trim.

It was the second burglary in the same general vicinity during the afternoon hours Wednesday, although the descriptions of the subjects in each case were quite different.

Three hours earlier, the latest in a series of deception buglaries took place nearby, also in Bethpage, where an elderly homeowner was the target of a thief.

In that case, an 84-year-old man allowed a suspect into his home. The victim was distracted and cash and jewelry were missing when the intruder left.

That suspect is described as a white male, about 5’10,” with a stocky build, wearing a black jacket with a gray fur collar.

Police said Thursday that they are investigating whether the crimes are related, but can not be sure at this time.

Detectives request anyone with information regarding either of these crimes to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-877-244-TIPS.  All callers will remain anonymous, police say.
