They praised the sweet and spicy combination that Johar mixed fresh from herbs and spices he ground by hand into an all-purpose condiment. It was exotic for some westerners, but a staple in Johar's native Punjab Province in India. Then one day, Johar, an accomplished CPA with an MBA in finance living in Syosset, found himself out of work: downsized; restructured. He earned a real-estate license, but yearned for something more. His family's recipes may be secret, but the secret to Johar's success is family: His family, including sons Karan and Kunal, urged him to …

Historic Maine Maid Inn Designated as Landmark

Town Board's decision offers protections for the historic home and stop on the Underground Railroad.

The Maine Maid Inn, once home to Valentine Hicks and a hiding place for runaway slaves, has earned a landmark designation that could help preserve it. The Oyster Bay Town Board voted unanimously Tuesday to grant town landmark status to the currently vacant structure hidden in a corner of Jericho. What's more, Supervisor John Venditto said at least two restaurants are interested in operating the old mansion as a restaurant again. Thomas Abbe was delighted by the decision and thanked the broad coalition of historians and civic leaders who joined forces to preserve the old Hicks homestead. "Your thoughts and actions helped carry our efforts to today's success," said Abbe, who serves as clerk of the Jericho Preparative Meeting of the Religious…

As a resident, I'm thrilled to see this happen. This effort will preserve a very important part of Long Island's past. This Quaker enclave is a way for our children to look back at our history and inspire them to the future. I've greatly enjoyed writing about this and look forward to future updates. jd   more ›

Restaurant's Sudden Closure Causes Stir

Week in Review: April 29-May 5: Also,

These were the big news story of the past week in Plainview Patch: 1. Burger King: The restaurant near the Plainview diner suddenly closed up operations last Sunday. It is still not clear what happened. 2. Burglaries Down: The surrounding area had a few, but Plainview once again was spared this past week. The trend seems to be continuing. 3. Austin Harris: A young man gave a gift to his lost friend this week, a touching story of how Austin Harris still cares for Spencer Reis. 4. Seal Appears: A grey seal made an appearance on Tobay Beach this week. 5. Local Musicals: It was a big week in Plainview for classic musicals, with Plainview's Drama Cadets presenting "How to Succeed..." and Mattlin producing "Bye Bye Birdie."
