Polls are open from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. today; two board candidates are running unopposed.
Plainview-Old Bethpage voters will decide the fate of the school district's proposed 2012-13 budget Tuesday. The polls are open from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the district's three usual polling places: Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School, Jamaica Avenue School and Old Bethpage Elementary School. The proposed $137 million budget represents a modest 2.2 percent increase in overall spending. It maintains all staff and programs. The plan would convert two part-time teachers into full time positions and expand the district's Chinese language program. The tax levy, the amount to be raised through property taxes, would increase by 2.5 percent. That figure is well under the state’s so-called "tax cap," which is derived from a complex formula and …

New York has 95 delegates for the taking in Tuesday's Republican Presidential Primary. How will Plainview vote?
While the race is all but over, the Republican presidential field casts its eyes to New York with Tuesday's primary and 95 delegates on the line. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is the clear frontrunner, but Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich remain in the race. This is a closed primary, so only registered Republicans can vote. You can look up where to vote on the Board of Elections website. It's also primary day in Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, meaning 222 delegates are at stake. Romney leads the field with 685 delegates, more than halfway to the 1,144 needed to wrap up the presidential nomination, according to The New York Times. The latest Quinnipiac poll has Romney leading in New York with 54 percent of those …

The newly drawn Congressional District lines could have sweeping implications for many Long Island communities.
If you live in Plainview, your congressman is most likely Steve Israel, D-Dix Hills. If you live in Old Bethpage or Bethpage, your U.S. representative is Peter King, R-Seaford. But new Congressional district lines drawn by a federal panel of judges drastically alter both congressmen's districts. The implications for Long Island's congressional delegation and the people they represent could be significant. Long Island also loses one congressional representative in the process. Patch wants your gut reaction to the changes. Tell us about them in the comment section and let's get the discussion going It's entirely possible that both incumbents have enough political strength and money to carry the day with name recognition and the power of …

More than one month after Election Day, the winner of District 14 has been declared.
Republican incumbent Joseph Belesi has been officially re-elected to the 14th district seat of the Nassau County Legislature after a month-long counting of absentee ballots and machine audit. A judge certified his win over Democratic challenger Eva Pearson on Monday. The final vote tally was not immediately available from the Board of Elections, but Belesi said he was told he won by 107 votes, which gives Republicans a 10-9 majority in the legislature. "It's a win for the people of Nassau County," Belesi said on Monday. "It was a difficult month and a difficult campaign with many personal attacks, but I tried to stay above it all and plan to continue to do what I've doing, working to control the tax situation." Since Election Day, when …
