Newsday reports improvements are needed on the main branch.
A report in Newsday Sunday indicates the Long Island Rail Road intends to spend some $203 million to renovate its main line, with major improvements planned for Hicksville station. The newspaper said Hicksville station is in need of significant repairs and a bridge in Westbury needs to be replaced. The money was originally targeted for a project that would build a third rail line along the central route that runs from Jamaica east to Hicksville. What do you think of the idea: Money well spent? More delays? Just more problems? Sound off in the comments and take our poll:

Hot car reminders, flag displays, and GAP programs in this week's TOBAY Notebook.
Town Supervisor John Venditto is warning all residents about the dangers of leaving children and pets in cars during the warmer months. According to Venditto, 30 children died in 2011 after being left in a hot car in the United States and he doesn't want TOBAY residents to become part of that statistic. "If the outside temperature is 93 degrees, the temperature inside a car can reach 125 degrees in 20 minutes," he said, reminding parents, grandparents, and caregivers to follow simple steps to protect children and pets. Leaving children alone in a car is a bad idea, let alone in a hot car in the summer. A child can be accidentally locked in a car or even forgotten by busy caregivers. Pets are also easily forgotten, so Venditto says to leave…

A weekly look-in at the news of Nassau County.
The Nassau Interim Finance Authority (NIFA) on Thursday rejected County Executive Ed Mangano's proposed contract with Morgan Stanley to broker a deal for a privatized sewer system. The deal would have paid the financial service firm at least $5 million to broker a deal for the county with a private operator for the sewer system and an investor who would fund the transaction. According to Long Island Business News: The contract, approved by the Nassau Legislature April 16, would have retained Morgan Stanley to find an investor that would lend the county upward of $750 million in exchange for making a profit from running the county’s failing sewer system. "The NIFA board is clearly confused about the potential public-private partnership for …

The railroad says the goal is to control unruly passengers.
The Long Island Rail Road is banning alcohol on weekend trains coming out of Penn Station, starting tonight. All trains from midnight to 5 a.m. will be alcohol free. Booze will also be banned on LIRR platforms. The goal is to reduce the number of disorderly passengers and protect train crews from unruly riders, the LIRR said. What do you think of the idea? Is drinking a problem on the LIRR? Or is this just another move to outlaw fun and personal choice from our lives? Tell us in the poll and sound off in the comments.

Town Board's decision offers protections for the historic home and stop on the Underground Railroad.
The Maine Maid Inn, once home to Valentine Hicks and a hiding place for runaway slaves, has earned a landmark designation that could help preserve it. The Oyster Bay Town Board voted unanimously Tuesday to grant town landmark status to the currently vacant structure hidden in a corner of Jericho. What's more, Supervisor John Venditto said at least two restaurants are interested in operating the old mansion as a restaurant again. Thomas Abbe was delighted by the decision and thanked the broad coalition of historians and civic leaders who joined forces to preserve the old Hicks homestead. "Your thoughts and actions helped carry our efforts to today's success," said Abbe, who serves as clerk of the Jericho Preparative Meeting of the Religious…

My understanding is that the LIRR already owns enough space along the right-of-way to add a third track from Jamacia to Hicksville, and that it is the NIMBYs who bought a house with its back yard along the tracks that are the problem. If the east side access to Grand Central ever gets completed, they're going to need that third track very badly.   more ›
