Check on a Neighbor or Relative; They May Be Snowbound

Healthy folks - and those with teenaged kids -- might have dug themselves out by now. Elderly neighbors might need help.

So, you've dug out the walk, the driveway and the car that was boxed in by the dutiful work of a town snowplow.

Outstanding: Now it's time to help a neighbor.

Often, older people in your neighborhood have decided to wait it out a bit. By now, they may need your help.

Elder care experts say despite the increased risk of heart attack, breathing difficulties and serious falls, older neighbors might risk shoveling snow because they fear entrapment and isolation. Financial worries may discourage some from calling on a plowing service or hiring a local kid with a snow blower.

1. If you see an older neighbor's home is still snowed-in, his car locked in the driveway, knock and offer to help dig them out. Bring your kid along; he might learn something.

2. Make sure you are in good physical condition for snow shoveling. Experts say you are at risk of having a heart attack while shoveling if you smoke, have heart trouble, or lead a sedentary lifestyle.

3. Ask others in the neighborhood to get involved. Who do they know who may need assistance? Knock on the elderly neighbor's door together. Bring your neighbor's kids, too. (They're off from school this week.)

4. Get to know your older neighbors. They've got great stories to tell, if only you'd ask them. Offer to make a store run and salt their steps, experts say.
