Kids Weekend Planner

The rain is supposed to stop by Saturday, and if you’re looking to get out with the kids we’ve come up with a few suggestions that everyone can enjoy.

See Pippi Longstocking come alive in Port Washington, or attend a preschool Shabbat at the Enjoy a picnic with tots at the or take the kids to Jones Beach to explore the waters. Bethpage Village Restoration has a hands on family event that takes you back to the 19th Century.

2.      Preschool Shabbat

Where/When: Plainview Jewish Center, 95 Floral Dr. W., Plainview, 516-938-8610, Friday May 20 @6-6:30 p.m.

Why Go: A fun and spiritual service for children ages 1-5, which includes songs, stories and prayer

Pricing: Free

3.      Lag B’Omer Picnic

Where/When: Mid Island Y JCC, 45 Manetto Hill Rd., Plainview, 516-822-3535, Thursday May 19 @6:30-7:30 p.m.

Why Go: Moms and children ages 2-5 can enjoy a pizza picnic, make kites, sing songs, and play games.

Pricing: $25 nonmembers

4.      Baywalk

Where/When: Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, Jones Beach State Park, Wantagh, 516-679-7254, Sunday May 22 @ 1:30-3 p.m.

Why Go: Wear your water shoes as you explore the bay and discover the animals that call this area home.

Pricing: $4.00 adults, $3.00 children, $8.00 parking fee during season

5.      History Alive

Where/When: Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Round Swamp Rd. Old Bethpage, 516-572-8400, www.nassaucountyny.gov. Sunday May 22, @ noon- 4 p.m.

Why Go:  Tell the kids to leave the cell phones, I pads, and iPods home as they take a step back in time by participating in re-enactments of 19th Century activities, including churning fresh cream into butter at the Powell Farmhouse, carding wool at the Benjamin House, assisting in making a hat, and sweeping the porch at the General Store with a handmade corn broom.

 Pricing: $10, $7.00 for ages 5-12 under 5 free
