Happy 2014 Plainview: What's Open, Closed New Year's Day

National holiday means the governments are closed, but much of the rest of the retail world is open.

New Year's Day is a national holiday: Here's what's open and closed on Wednesday:

All state, federal and local governmental offices are closed. There is no mail delivery. There is no garbage pickup in the Town of Oyster Bay Wednesday, but it returns to normal schedule on Thursday morning.

Banks and the New York financial markets are closed. The ATMs should work.

The Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library is closed today. It reopens Thursday at 9 a.m.

Plainview schools are closed, as well; students return to classes on Thursday.

The LIRR is operating on a holiday schedule.

Many retail stores and most restaurants are generally open. Holiday hours may apply, particularly at area malls. There's lots of new movies playing locally. 

And this year, there's something else: A major winter storm is forecast to hit Long Island beginning Thursday afternoon and into Friday. Preparations are in order. Patch will keep you updated.
