It's Super Bowl Sunday, a day many think of as a kind of blue-collar national holiday.

Today, tens of millions of us blow their New Year's diets. The nation guzzles beer, noshes nachos and chomps wings, the latter made famous by four-straight inglorious Buffalo Bills' defeats. Today otherwise sensible people scream at TV sets over two teams they know next to nothing about. Why should that stop us?

Each day the "5 Things" column will tell you five essential pieces of information you need to know today, like events happening or community topics being covered on the site later on in the day. Have an event or topic that should appear in this column? Add it to the calendar or send us a news tip.
