Film: Shake Hands with the Devil

Mid-Island Y JCC presents Genocide Prevention & Awareness Month

Join them for a viewing of "Shake Hands with the Devil".  The film, based on the book by Lt. Gen. Romeo Dallaire, chronicles his time as the force commander for the UN peacekeeping operation in Rwanda before and during the genocide.  He stayed throughout the genocide even though his orders were to leave.

Following the film, there will be a Q&A with Mike Brand.  Mike is a human rights activist and eduator.  Mike's interest was sparked during college while he was researching the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.  This prompted him to visit Rwanda in 2008 to work for a local nonprofit.  In 2010 Mike received a Jewish Service Corps fellowship from the American Jewish Join Distribution Committee.  He spent a year living and working at the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (ASYV), home to 500 orphaned and vulnerable Rwandan teens.  In 2011, Mike was inducted into the 2011 Carl Wilkens Fellowship class as a part of United To End Genocide.
