Passover Services, Family Celebrations Abound in Plainview

The nearby Bethpage Library has a family-oriented ballet about the life of Pocahontas.

Like other gatherings worldwide, Plainview families will celebrate tonight their heritage and their children. Passover arrives at sundown, bringing great food, companionship and the Four Questions. Elders will recount a story of thanksgiving, thousands of years old, about an oppressed people and their deliverance from bondage by G-d.

1. Monday evening is the First Night of Passover, which commemorates the Exodus of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt and their ultimate deliverance to the Promised Land. There are several services today and this evening around Plainview. For a list, click here.

2. The  offers an exhibit of the work of photographer Ira Finkelstein. Shown during normal library hours.

3. The Bethpage Public Library presents the life of Pocahontas as celebrated through dance: Ballet Long Island presents "Pocahontas - The Peace Maker," a new ballet for the entire family. The program is scheduled for 2 p.m. It is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis. Pocahontas was an Indian princess and daughter of Chief Powhatan during the early Colonial period. She is best known for saving the life of Capt. John Smith and marrying Capt. John Rolph.

4. With school out, there's great opportunities to visit local points of interest. The 40 acres of the historic Bailey Arboretum in Lattingtown is open daily and free to the public. Or head to Cove Neck and Sagamore Hill, the home of President Theodore Roosevelt, offers insights into the 26th president.
