Minivan Flips in Crash; 8 Injured, 2 Seriously on Broadway

Violent collision declared mass casualty incident; multiple departments respond. Some passengers flee scene

At least eight people were hurt, two seriously Tuesday evening when a packed minivan collided with a car on North Broadway, authorities said.

Hicksville Firefighters and Nassau County Police responded to multiple calls for an auto accident in front of Sears in Hicksville. They came upon a flipped over minivan with at seven people injured inside near the split for Routes 106 and 107. Another victim was hurt inside the auto, authorities said.

Hicksville Fire Chief Christopher Moskos, in command of the operation, declared a "mass casualty incident," a formal designation that brings a mass response from surrounding fire companies and their ambulance teams and alerts area hospitals to the emergency.

As firefighters descended on the scene, authorities learned that several people in the van and one person in the car had fled the crash site on foot. Police were looking for those people early this morning.

The eight injured passengers were transported to local hospitals, including two with serious injuries taken to the trauma unit at NUMC, authorities said. Nassau Police said they were investigating early Wednesday. A spokeswoman said there may have three people seriously hurt, but the crash was still under investigation.
