Happy Thanksgiving: What's Open, Closed in Plainview

Many retailers and some restaurants here and nearby are open today; some on reduced hours.

Happy Thanksgiving, Plainview.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, there is much to be grateful for.

Today is a national holiday, which means all federal, state and local government offices are closed. Banks and the financial markets are closed. There is no postal delivery.

But if you're heading to the big parade in Manhattan, the Long Island Rail Road is operating on a holiday schedule, but has 22 additional trains systemwide for those headed to and from the parade. Off peak fares apply Thursday as well as Friday, when the LIRR will operate on a near normal weekday schedule. Extra cars are being added to trains.

Most supermarkets in Plainview are open Thursday morning but will close by mid-afternoon. for example, is open from 7 a.m.-5 p.m.; John's Farms is open from 7 a.m.-2 p.m.

The same is true with the area's most popular eateries: For example, the Plainview Diner is open from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m.; Gold and Myer's Bagels in Morton Village is open from 5:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Most fine dining restaurants and even bars are closed in Plainview this evening. The popular Main Event sportsbar is closed Thursday, for example.

Stop means stop. Just like stop signs, where it seems like the local definition is to slow down toRead More 30 mph. You STOP, and look. Then go. I have seen kids having a tough time crossing Jamaica Ave because of this twisted definition of STOP. If anything, this is a good way to relearn what should of been taught in drivers ed. When I moved to Plainview, people at a stop sign would signal the driver that got there first to go. Now it's a race to the stop sign and fly by it to avoid having the other guy go first.
