Shopping on Thanksgiving Day?

Black Friday tradition in peril as retailers push shopping craze to Turkey Day.

Thanksgiving isn't just about family, food and football anymore, as some of the country's biggest retailers have pushed the Black Friday shopping frenzy into the holiday.

Target has already announced it will open on midnight Friday, inciting workers to petition the big-box for making them come on a holiday – nearly 200,000 have signed. Kohl's will also open at midnight, along with Macy's.

But for other major retailers, midnight just isn't soon enough. For example, Best Buy plans to open at 10 p.m. on Thursday, sparking another worker rebellion. Farmingdale's is another chain set to open at 10 p.m.

Locally, at least two malls have kept with tradition. Roosevelt Field Mall will open Friday at 4 a.m. Walt Whitman Mall is closed Thanksgiving and will open 8 a.m. Friday.

If these retailers have it their way, the Thanksgiving ritual wouldn't end with a late-night turkey sandwich. Instead, they're asking shoppers to fight through their tryptophan fog to get the earliest possible start to the holiday shopping season.

What do you think about that?
