Air Quality Alert Issued for Area

Weather service also warns about excessive heat Friday.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an air quality alert from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. today.

The National Weather Service said the alert was issued because air quality levels outside are higher than 100 on the Air Quality Index (AQI), a system measuring pollutants.

A higher number on the AQI indicates higher levels of pollution, so the Dept. of Health is recommending limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity today to avoid potential health problems—especially young and elderly people, as well as anyone with asthma or heart disease.

"Breathing outdoor air with high ozone levels, even for a short period of time (hours or days), can affect health," according to an "Ozone Fact Sheet" from the Dept. of Health.

The heat warning was issued for Friday when temperatures are expected to rise to the high 90s.
