Digging Out Can Be Dangerous

The clean-up in the aftermath of the big blizzard is probably a priority today. Don't over-do it.

Snow shoveling can be good exercise. It can also kill you.

That's the warning of experts who say shoveling thick heavy snow can cause injuries to muscles and the back and sometimes result in heart attacks. Here are some tips for the clean-up in the wake of yesterday's big storm: 

1. Don't do more than you should. If you get out of breath performing ordinary tasks, like climbing stairs or jogging across a street, don't shovel, experts say. Heart attacks can result, often the day after the shoveling.

If you do shovel the snow, take smaller scoops of snow and take your time. Big scoops can cause repetitive motion injuries to the lower back. Dress properly for the weather conditions to avoid frostbite. And be aware of moving vehicles. Snow muffles their usual sound. Approaching cars may be dealing with limited visibility. In an emergency, call 911, and the will respond.
