A band of heavy thunderstorms swept across the North Shore of Long Island just before noon Friday, bringing torrential rain and flash flooding and causing street closings.
National Weather Service radar showed a heavy band of thunder showers sweeping across Long Island Sound from west to east and stretching northward towards southern Connecticut.
Emergency Management officials cautioned drivers to be particularly careful. Many Long Island roadways were covered with free-running water. Some streets are being closed.
Several car accidents were reported across Long Island roadways as the storm passed through, including a report of a crash on the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway near Hempstead Turnpike, a bus into a sink hole in Levittown and an overturned tractor trailer in Medford on the LIE.

By 1:30 p.m., NWS radar showed the storm moving easterly across Suffolk County.
Additional storms are forecast for the rest of Friday and throughout the weekend.
