Summer Leaving Kids Bored? Try Chess Boards

The Plainview Library has a program for young people designed to learn and master the game.

The offers a program tonight that could just get bored kids some mental stimulation:

TODAY'S 5:

1. The Library's at 7 p.m. Thursday is for children entering grades 3 and up. Chess is rapidly becoming one of America's fastest growing activities for children.  Beginners are welcome to the program, which has separate registrations for each session. 

2. The wreck of the Kandi Won was raised by a from the bottom of Oyster Bay on Wednesday. The 34-foot Silverton Convertable killing three children, on July 4. See the story of the ship's recovery here.

3. Oyster Bay Supervisor addressed the tragedy at Tuesday's town board meeting. See his comments here. Police say an investigation will take at least a week to determine the cause of the sinking.

Stop means stop. Just like stop signs, where it seems like the local definition is to slow down toRead More 30 mph. You STOP, and look. Then go. I have seen kids having a tough time crossing Jamaica Ave because of this twisted definition of STOP. If anything, this is a good way to relearn what should of been taught in drivers ed. When I moved to Plainview, people at a stop sign would signal the driver that got there first to go. Now it's a race to the stop sign and fly by it to avoid having the other guy go first.
