More Lose Power in Plainview

Storm knocks down trees, floods streets.

Hurricane Irene struck Long Island with a vengeance early Sunday morning, cutting power to thousands of Plainview residents.

Nearly 4,000 LIPA Plainview customers--almost 10,000 people-- were without power, acccording to the utility.

There was no word on when it would be restored but LIPA crews were seen out repairing lines.  LIPA said at 3 p.m., "Now that the worst of the storm has passed, the hundreds of workers we amassed before the storm are beginning damage assessments and will restore service as quickly and safely as possible. Currently we are unable to provide estimated restoration times. LIPA will be working around the clock until every customer's power is back on."
