Fair to Feature Teddy Bear Clinic, Fun Run & ‘Solve the Outbreak’ Game

Students from the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, librarians from the school’s Health Sciences Library and the Plainview Old-Bethpage Central School District (POBCSD) will be joining forces to host a Health Education Fair on Wednesday, October 30 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Mattlin Middle School in Plainview. Visitors will be able to try their hand at laparoscopic surgery techniques using a virtual game; solve an outbreak using a special iPad app and bandage up a teddy bear at the free bear clinic.

The Health Fair is part of a National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services and the National Library of Medicine award granted to the Medical School’s Health Sciences Library for consumer health resources education. The medical students represent various “student interest groups” at the medical school, which participate in extracurricular activities that reflect the students’ medical specialty interests. School of Medicine specialty groups include: Wilderness, Pediatric, Neurology, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Oncology and Emergency Medicine clubs.

Other activities and educational tips will include: essential knot tying, map use, identifying poisonous plants, Halloween safety, nutrition label literacy and nutrition tips, “When to call an ambulance,” smoking cessation, medication safety, health careers, how to find authoritative health information on the internet, household products safety, exercise tips and information on what do the new guidelines on sports injuries and concussions mean to you and your child. The fair kicks off with a one-mile Fun Run around the new POBCSD track at 3:30 p.m. Mattlin Middle School is located at 100 Washington Avenue, Plainview, NY 11803. For
