National Grid Workers Team Up to Send Holiday Cards to Veterans

Hundreds of workers, including those at Hicksville, take part in first 'Holiday Mail for heroes' program.

Hundreds of National Grid employees created holiday cards to send to military personnel overseas and war veterans at home as part of the company’s first-ever “Holiday Mail for Heroes” program Wednesday.

The event, organized in partnership with the American Red Cross, took place at six National Grid locations on Long Island and in Brooklyn. Additionally, National Grid employees dropped off hundreds of cards designed by their children.

“This is a special day for National Grid when we take time to recognize our veterans and all that they have done for our country," said John Bruckner, National Grid’s President of Long Island Transmission and Distribution, addressing employees in a brief program at National Grid offices in Hicksville.

“It’s imperative to let the men and women overseas know that we support them and by sending a little piece of home to them we hopefully can brighten their day," said Bruckner, who serves as a board member of the American Red Cross on Long Island. "We are proud to be partnering in this event with great organization like the Red Cross.”

“The American Red Cross on Long Island is proud to partner with National Grid on our ‘Holiday Mail for Heroes’ campaign,” said John Miller, CEO of the American Red Cross on Long Island. “It is always important to keep the members of our military in our thoughts, particularly during the holiday season."

National Grid has a program to encourage veterans to work for National Grid. The Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG) has over 200 members company officials said.

Over the summer, 40 volunteers from National Grid, Moonjumpers Charitable Foundation, Inc., Leadership Huntington, Cow Harbor Warriors and Sons of the American Legion renovated the kitchen, laundry and dining rooms at the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center’s Salvation Army Northport Veterans Residence.

And in late September, employees worked with Habitat for Humanity to build a new home in Mastic Beach, Long Island for a war veteran, Kimberly Gilbreath, and her daughter.

The American Red Cross will now prepare the cards for delivery over the next few weeks, identifying troops overseas as well as retired military members at facilities across the country.
