A 'Garden of Eatin' Sprouts at St. Margaret's

Community garden will provide fresh vegetables to those in need.

A team of neighbors and St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Plainview are coming together next week to celebrate a very special community garden.

Along with the AHRC's Helen Kaplan Center, Washington Avenue neighbors will gather for an ice-cream social at the church Thursday, Aug. 15 to celebrate their  “Garden of Eatin.’ ”

“We envisioned this garden being a community undertaking,” said the Rev. Jennifer Andrews-Weckerly, rector of St. Margaret’s. “ I can’t think of a better way of doing that than getting to know our friends at AHRC. The residents have been a tremendous help feeding our neighbors in need.”

The garden, which is visible from the street on the property’s north end, was nurtured through the combined efforts of the neighbors. Known as a “grow to give garden,” it's fresh organic vegetables will be donated to food banks in Hicksville and Huntington.

Residents from the Kaplan Center have helped parishioners water the garden and get vegetables ready for delivery on Mondays and Wednesdays since June.

Work on the garden will continue through the fall, as church and AHRC leaders consider additional ways that the Kaplan Center and St. Margaret’s might be resources for one another.

The idea for the Garden of Eatin’ sprouted this year, when parishioners sought ways to use their 11-acre property for community outreach, church leaders said. The garden, they said, is a tangible means of serving others, sharing in fellowship, and connecting with the community.

The Episcopal Church of St. Margaret was founded in 1963. Celebrating 50 years of ministry this year, The Rev. Andrews-Weckerly is the parish’s third rector.
