Memorial Planned for Spencer Reis; Fundraiser to Follow

Special scholarship event at Dave and Buster's in Farmingdale June 15.

A young man whose brief life brought Plainview together will be honored this weekend by his soccer team and the community at large.

The Plainview Old Bethpage Soccer Club plans to honor their former teammate, Spencer Reis, with a memorial ceremony at Plainview's travel fields. A memorial dedication sign will be installed at the field in his memory and be unveiled Saturday at 1 p.m.

The ceremony will include a moment of silence and a few words about Spencer by John Micari, his soccer coach. Spencer jersey – No. 55 – will be retired.  The public is invited to the event.

Spencer died a year ago at 14 from a form of leukemia. He was posthumously voted Plainview's most influential person by Patch readers in a poll last year. The unveiling of his memorial headstone took place this week at Wellwood Cemetery.

His life is being commemorated in many ways around the community in the form of scholarships and other programs.

Among them is a special Spencer Cares Scholarship fundraiser at Dave and Buster's in Farmingdale on Saturday June 15. Food, games and prizes are part of the package. Games cards of $10 and $20 and a $25 per person buffet dinner are available for purchase.
