A powerful series of thunderstorms Wednesday left thousands of Long Islanders without power but the Plainview area was spared the worst of the storm's effects.
Hundreds of LIPA customers were without power after midnight Thursday in neighboring Syosset, the result of a fierce band of thunderstorms that struck the North Shore along the Northern Boulevard corridor Wednesday. But Plainview suffered only isolated pockets of power outages. Few remained at midnight Thursday.
But major power outages were reported from Roslyn east to Oyster Bay as police from Nassau, Old Brookville and Muttontown swarmed 25A to direct traffic at disabled lights and removed widespread debris from trees cracked in half. Limbs littered the roadway, suggesting powerful winds.
In Glen Cove, a beloved gazebo in a waterfront park collapsed into pieces.
Over half of the more than 22,000 outages reported to LIPA are located on Nassau's North Shore. Of those, almost 1,500 Syosset and Woodbury homes and 65 Glen Cove customers were without power, according to LIPA's outage map from earlier Wednesday. The numbers in Plainview and southward were minimul.
Crews were working through the night to restore power to the impacted areas.
The storms had the positive effect of dramatically lowering temperatures. Thursday's high temperature is expected in the mid-80s, a full 10 degrees lower than Wednesday's high. The forecast calls for more rain this morning and into tomorrow.
