Friday is Flag Day in the United States, the anniversary of the adoption of the flag by the Continental Congress in 1777.
While it is not a federal holiday, the day is marked in some communities with a parade. Schools sometimes present special programs or note the day in classroom sessions.
President Barack Obama signed a proclamation earlier this week designating Friday as Flag Day and the entire week leading up to it as National Flag Week.
