Love on Wheels: Skates and Dates

Catching the eye of the opposite sex can be difficult but with the right technique, it may be easier than you think.

This weekend I was riding on the Cross Island Parkway. I was watching the runners and walkers exercising along the path on the water in Bayside and noticed a guy on rollerblades.  It made me think that I haven’t seen people on rollerblades in a long time.  Back in the early to mid 1990’s rollerblading was the thing to do and you would see people riding on rollerblades all over.  I don’t see it so much anymore but it brought me back to when I purchased a pair of my own back in 1993.  I was single and living in the city.  In the spring, Central Park was a great place to meet eligible men.  By the summer, it was empty on the weekend as people left for their Hamptons or Fire Island summer shares.  I am assuming it is pretty much the same now.

I would sling my roller blades over my shoulder and head to Central Park.  That was pretty much all I did with them as these roller blades were not meant to be ridden on but they were my “man catching devices”.  Believe it or not but those suckers worked!  I would actually meet men wearing those things over my shoulder walking through the park or hanging out on the Great Lawn with my friends. They were just enough of a conversation piece to make me appear sporty and ourdoorsy to equally as sporty and outdoorsy men (or so they thought I was).  I did ride those roller blades once or twice and landed face up or face down each time.  Slung over my shoulder was a better place for them than on my feet. When I met my husband, I retired those blades and passed them down to another single friend.

Seeing that guy on his blades, and my flash back to my “man catching devices”, made me think about what other people have done to meet a member of the opposite sex.  People have said babies and dogs are great magnets to meet people.  How do single people make themselves stand out now? I have one friend who swears by the push-up bra.  But other than flaunting amped up assets, what
are today’s rollerblades?
