Help Prevent Pill Abuse on Drug Take-Back Day

Are you a drug pusher without knowing it? Prescription pill abusers most frequently get their fix from family and friends–including the home medicine cabinet. Use a North Shore-LIJ Drug Take-Back station for safe disposal of expired, unused, and unwanted drugs this Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to keep family and friends safe.

Old ways to discard drugs—throwing them away or flushing them down the toilet—are bad for our health and our environment. The United States Geological Survey detected a 96-percent contamination rate when it sampled sources of public drinking water. It found medicine like steroids, hormones, codeine, antibiotics, antimicrobials, acetaminophen and ibuprofen in drinking-water supplies.

The Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Drug Take-Back is free and anonymous, with no questions asked. Bring unused pharmaceutical or over-the-counter drugs to one of 13 North Shore-LIJ Drug Take-Back locations–including four Nassau drive-up/drop-offs:

  • New York City: Forest Hills Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital (midtown Manhattan) and Staten Island University Hospital (North and South campuses).
  • Nassau: Bethpage Urgi-Care, Glen Cove Hospital and Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream.
  • Nassau drive-up/drop-off: Plainview Hospital, Syosset Hospital, North Shore University Hospital (Manhasset), and LIJ Medical Center (New Hyde Park).
  • Suffolk: Huntington Hospital and Southside Hospital (Bay Shore).
The North Shore-LIJ Health System has collected more than a ton of unused or expired medications since 2010.

For more information on collection locations, call 516-465-2535.
