Funeral Today for Plainview Fire Capt. Danny Levy

Veteran member dies from 9/11-related illness; to be honored Wednesday with line-of-duty funeral. Mangano orders flags to half staff.

Capt. Danny Levy, a beloved life member of the Plainview Fire Department and mentor to many younger Plainview firefighters, died on Monday from 9/11-related illness, firefighters said.

As a volunteer, Levy worked extensively at Ground Zero in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. His passing is considered a Plainview firefighters said.

The funeral procession, beginning shortly after 9 a.m., will likely impact traffic on Old Country Road in the vicinity of Plainview Fire Headquarters.

In response to his death, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano ordered flags on county government buildings to be flown at half-staff in Levy's honor.

“I join our citizens in mourning the loss of Ex-Captain and Life Member Danny Levy and send my deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and fellow brothers and sisters of the fire service,” Mangano said.

Mangano's executive order takes effect Wednesday and runs through Tuesday, Jan. 15.

The Plainview Fire Department issued the following statement:

"It is with deep regret that the Chief's office, the Board of Directors and the officers and members of Engine Company No. 1 announce the Line of Duty Death due to a 911 related illness of Ex-Captain and Life Member Danny Levy."

The funeral service will take place on Wednesday 10 a.m. at Guttermans Chapel, 8000 Jericho Tpke., Woodbury. Burial to follow at Wellwood Cemetery in East Farmingdale.

Plainview firefighters are assembling in their full dress (Class A) uniforms at fire headquarters on Old Country Road Wednesday at 9 a.m. for the procession to the funeral home. The trucks are scheduled to depart promptly at 9:15 a.m.
