What Should Done About Fern Place School? [Poll]

The School District proposes a new parking lot; the neighbors say that won't work.

The former now leased to a private agency that serves students with Down syndrome, has been causing parking and traffic issues in the nearby neighborhood, especially along Orchard Street in Plainview.

The school district has proposed a new parking lot; the neighbors object for various reasons.

and then let us know what you think is the best solution:

Putting no parking signs on Orchard Street is hurting those who live there. My parents constantly need to jockey their cars. The only solution that will work for everyone is more parking at the school.

Thanks, Jodi: What do your parents think about the position of the lot. Are they against putting it out front like many of the neighbors?

We are Jodi's parents. We are NOT opposed to the position of the parking lot and it is our understanding that a natural buffer of shrubs will be planted so that the view for those living across the street from the school will be pleasant-probably an improvement to the way it is now. About the "no parking" signs-many, if not all homes with these signs have 2 car driveways (we do not) and workers or visitors to these homes often park in front of our house leaving us no place to park since as my daughter has said we need to constantly jockey our cars. We were opposed to the "no parking" signs and would not want one by our house. We also believe that many of the staff that park by our house do so on a regular basis so that they can come and go more easily without the congestion that exists at the school parking lot.

Because you don't have to look at it. No matter what if they go through with this we never know what will come next. They put a sign in front of my house without permission and I called them and they removed it. I don't believe the parking is the only problem it's traffic done our street due to the school and increased enrollment.

The parking lot is not the answer they need bigger everthing

Sell the property and school behind, develop it with affordable homes and raise revenue instead of raising our school tax again and again

The residents actually suggested before leasing it out but school district ignored and didn't acknowledge the request. They definitely would make more money If there would be like 20 houses and it would make the community look so beautiful rather than buses driving up and down the street all day. They have destroyed the whole community with the constant traffic we just want our community back. We certainly will make that a request when there lease is up in 2018.

Great idea. Houses in Plainview aren't selling so let's build 20 more. Plus the taxes on 20 homes would be half of what ACDS is paying to the school district. And then that half would have to be shared with the Town of Oyster Bay and Nassau County. Of course, since the people who would benefit are the people who live across the street from ACDS we can just increase their taxes by $250,000 to make up the shortfall. And buses don't drive up and down the street all day. They drive up and down the street when kids are coming to school and when they are leaving. ACDS is a gem that we should be proud, not something that we should be trying to get rid of.

Im gllad u feel that way. It wouldn't just benefit the people across the street nice try, it would make the area more desirable like it used to be. U should think about ur community before u start thinking about why the people across the street should pay more in taxes. The school isn't bringing in as much of a percent as you think. The school district wants u to think that. Stop putting words in my mouth about the school. The school Is great but needs to be in a different location that can fulfill there needs and not become a burdon to the community.
Tom May 05, 2012 at 03:25 PM
Perhaps the answer is that Tami should leave the school district and we can keep ACDS.
Tami May 05, 2012 at 05:17 PM
Clearly your the only one that feels so strongly about the parking lot why don't you leave. The community would rather have there block in peace and have the school become successful at a different location. Oh to the traffic and congestion thats a gem! I enjoy when people assume or make judgements about others when clearly they don't know all the answers.

Being uninformed about information is clearly a problem
