Baseball Hat Solves April Armed Robbery Attempt

Cops: DNA from cap links Uniondale man to Hicksville gunpoint heist.

Nassau County Detectives say they've charged a Uniondale man with armed robbery through DNA evidence contained on the suspect's baseball cap.

Jesus Bellamy, 26, was taken into custody at the County Court complex in Mineola when he appeared on an unrelated charge Wednesday.

Bellamy was sought in connection with an April 20, 2012 robbery at Credit Solutions on Old Country Road in Hicksville, according to detectives with the Second Squad.

Bellamy, of 196 Valcour Ave., Uniondale, entered the business at 550 West Old Country Road and confronted the firm's president, demanding money for credit repair services that Bellamy provided to the victim.

During the verbal altercation, Bellamy pulled a handgun from his waistband and continued his threats for money, police said. A struggle ensued and the victim was able to wrestle the gun from Bellamy, who then fled the building.

During his flight, Bellamy’s baseball cap was knocked off and was discovered at the scene. After forensic testing, a positive DNA match was made to the defendant, police said.

Nassau detectives were unable to locate Bellamy until Wednesday when he appeared in court. At the appearance, he was placed under arrest by Bureau of Special Operations officers without incident.

Bellamy is charged with felony counts of robbery, criminal use of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in First District Court, Hempstead.
