Area Break-ins Spark Local Action

A Syosset Community Watch group is holding a public meeting Monday night to fight the rash of area burglaries.

The recent in the general area of Syosset, Plainview, Bethpage and Old Bethpage has caused a local community group to take action.

The North Syosset Community Watch group will hold a public meeting Monday night at 8 p.m. Nassau County police and public officials will be on hand to address the concerns and raise awareness of the ongoing problem.

One of the homes burglarized belongs to a neighborhood watch block captain, group members said, an ironic indication of the severity of the problem.

The meeting, to be held at the Shelter Rock Church, 178 Cold Spring Road, Syosset, is open to the public.

According to the group, burglaries have been on the rise in the area for the past few years but the frequency of these break-ins has escalated in recent weeks.

That is confirmed by police reports from Nassau County's second precinct, which have shown a rash of recent burglaries throughout

The Syosset group says there have been three break-ins with loss of property and one attempted break-in over the past four weeks in the area.

"As a community we are now compelled to reach out to our county officials in an effort to apply pressure to catch these criminals," said Jeanmarie Scanapico, liaison to the North Syosset Community Watch group. "As in any other relatively affluent community, the people have chosen to live in Oyster Bay townships in order to seek out a safe quality of life. And, they expect positive results from local officials"

Representatives of the Nassau County Police Department will be on hand at Monday's meeting to discuss the problem. County and town officials are also expected to attend, Scanapico said.

"We realize that the police are addressing the situation as best they can given the manpower they have," Scanapico said.
