Cops Probe Shooting Death of Hicksville Woman, 23,

Megan Bookstaver was with two others when a gun discharged; Tarrytown Police launch probe.

A Hickville woman was killed Monday when she and two others were examining a weapon that discharged in a luxury Hudson River townhouse in Tarrytown.

Police identified the woman as Megan Bookstaver, 23, of Hicksville. She was apparently in an upper-floor bedroom with two other as-yet unidentified people when the weapon discharged, Tarrytown police told Patch.

The group was "examining firearms when one was discharged," Lt. William Herguth told the Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow Patch.

The round struck Bookstaver in the head and she was declared dead shortly after police arrived, about 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Her body was taken to the Westchester County Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy. Several weapons discovered at the scene were recovered, police said.

The Westchester District Attorney's Office said the investigation is ongoing.

There have been no arrests or suspects identified, and no determination of the cause of death has been made, the D.A.'s office said.

"The examination of evidence has just begun and will take some time," Herguth said.

Police said they are conducting interviews and categorize the death as "suspicious."

Bookstaver's Google+ profile listed her as a student at Mercy College and an employee of Woodbury Road Animal Hospital on Long Island.
