Crime Report: Arson, Bank Robbery, 30 Coach Bags Stolen

The following arrest information was supplied by the Second Precinct of the Nassau County Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate convictions.

Arrest/Arson

Arson Bomb Squad detectives reported the arrest of a male juvenile for Arson that occurred on Saturday June 4, 2011 at 1:40 p.m. in Hicksville.

According to detectives, the eleven year old defendant, while behind the detached garage belonging to 53 E. John Street, used a Bic lighter to ignite plastic packing material. After the defendant fled the scene, the packing material set the garage on fire. The fully engulfed garage then spread to the residence at 53 E. John Street, which caused extensive damage.

The Hicksville Fire Department assisted by Jericho, Plainview, Westbury and East Meadow Fire Departments responded to the scene with 150 firefighters, 15 pieces of fire apparatus and extinguished the blaze.

Twelve residents, who were displaced as a result of the fire, were assisted by the Red Cross.

Three firefighters sustained minor head related injuries as a result of the fire and were treated at the scene.

The defendant is charged with Arson 4th Degree and was released to his mother. He will appear on Friday June 17th, 2011 in Family Court, Westbury.

Robbery Atlantic Bank

The Robbery Squad reports the details of a bank robbery that occurred on Thursday June 9, 2011 at 9:53 a.m. in Hicksville.

According to detectives, a white male subject entered the Atlantic Bank located at 265 N. Broadway and presented a demand note to the teller. The subject fled out the rear doors with an undetermined amount of U.S. currency and was last seen leaving in a silver auto southeast on Bethpage Road. He is described as 25-30 years of age, 5’10”, wearing a dark baseball cap, black and white striped gold shirt, jeans, with a white cloth covering his nose and mouth.

At the time there were eight employees in the bank. One teller suffered a twisted ankle and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Detectives request anyone with information about the above crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers remain anonymous.

  • On May 25, criminal mischief, Stein Stein and EIT CPA, Hicksville, AC compressor damaged.
  • On May 27, criminal mischief, Zion Construction, Plainview, building damaged.
  • On May 30, making graffiti, Trinity Lutheran School, Hicksville, spray painted building.
  • On May 31, grand larceny, Mckinley Avenue, Hicksville, automobile stolen.
  • On June 1, petty larceny, Sears, Hicksville, 6 boxes of assorted jewelry stolen.
  • On June 1, burglary, Green Wagon Market, Oyster Bay, paperwork/lockbox stolen.
  • On June 2, petty larceny, , Plainview, cash/I-phone stolen.
  • On June 3, petty larceny, CVS, Hicksville, assorted merchandise stolen.
  • On June 4, criminal mischief, Chauncy Place, Woodbury, beer cans thrown at an automobile.
  • On June 5, burglary, Coach Store, Woodbury, 28 coach bags stolen.
  • On June 6, petty larceny, Garnet Lane, Plainview, GPS/sunglasses/cash stolen from automobile.

Second Precinct Arrests Reports

Police arrested the following: 

  • On May 30, James Hopkins, 57, was arrested and charged with trespassing on Newbridge Road in Hicksville.
  • On June 1, Joann Goodsell, 34, was arrested and charged with criminal mischief on N. Broadway in Hicksville.
  • On June 2, Christopher Biel, 35, was arrested and charged with DWI on Route 135 in Woodbury.
  • On June 2, Paul Anspake, 46, was arrested and charged with petty larceny on Jerusalem Avenue in Hicksville.
  • On June 3, Christina Scelzo, 40, was arrested amd charged with aggravated unlicensed 2nd degree on W. John Street in Hicksville.
  • On June 4, Matthew Caracappa, 20, was arrested and charged with aggravated DWI on N. Broadway in Hicksville.
  • On June 4, Ruth Renna, 54, was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed 2nd degree on Twin Lawns Avenue in Hicksville.
  • On June 5, Sam Kwak, 25, was arrested and charged with leaving an incident without a report on Woodbury Road in Woodbury.
