Dump Truck Fire Causing Big Delays on LIE

Eastbound traffic near Plainview at a crawl; several lanes blocked.

A drump truck fire on the Long Island Expressway near Plainview is causing major tie-ups in the eastbound lanes.

Authorities are reporting that up to three lanes are blocked in the vicinity of Plainview at Sunnyside Boulevard at 11 a.m.

Plainview firefighters responded to the call at 8:42 a.m. and found the dump truck fully engulfed in flames. They worked quickly to put down the difficult fire, which had spread from the engine to the contents of the dump truck.

Shortly before 11 a.m., traffic remained snarled for miles back from that site. The fire closed the Service Road and three lanes of the expressway.

The fire was just west of the Sunnyside Blvd. exit. There was a lot of smoke around the area of the exit.

How does a dump truck catch on fire???
Look like it may have had some combustible material which poses alot of questions? What caused the fire?

From the pictures it looks like the fire was in the engine which brings up questions of how well maintained the dump truck was.

The definition of STOP in the driving world is " the complete cessation of movement".Read More Sound like many people think STOP signs mean 1. Slow To Observe Police or 2. Slightly Touch On (brake) pedal. Time to go to traffic school online at www.oltep.com. Relearn what you forgot from Driver's Ed. Stay Safe

Stop means stop. Just like stop signs, where it seems like the local definition is to slow down toRead More 30 mph. You STOP, and look. Then go. I have seen kids having a tough time crossing Jamaica Ave because of this twisted definition of STOP. If anything, this is a good way to relearn what should of been taught in drivers ed. When I moved to Plainview, people at a stop sign would signal the driver that got there first to go. Now it's a race to the stop sign and fly by it to avoid having the other guy go first.
