Homes Evacuated After Car Rams Building

No one hurt after gas line is ruptured at The Hamlet in Plainview.

Several residents of town homes in The Hamlet in Plainview had to be evacuated Thursday after a vehicle crashed into a building.

Plainview firefighters, many of whom had just battled a smoky blaze in the Plainview Industrial Park, responded to the town house complex, located in Plainview on the North Service Road of the Long Island Expressway.

The driver of a Toyota Rav 4 struck the corner unit of the town homes and ruptured the main natural gas service line to five of the units, firefighters said.

Firefighters conducted the evacuation as others worked to shut down the
gas line. Once the gas was secured and the units checked for gas fumes,
crews removed an Audi from the garage and accessed  the damage to the
building, firefighters said.

Bethpage firefighters responded to the scene with their Technical Rescue Team and removed the car from the building using a hand operated winch. They then shored up the damaged structure and wall that contained all of the gas lines for the units.
