Crime Nearby: 2 Men Arrested in Car Theft

Suspect tried to flee after stop, Southampton police say.

Two men are being held at the Suffolk County jail in Riverside after being caught in Southampton driving in a car that was stolen a week earlier in Huntington Station, according to police. 

Southampton Village police said an officer spotted a vehicle Thursday night traveling up North Sea Road with its headlights off and pulled it over on County Road 39. When the officer ran a computer check on the vehicle, it was learned that the 2012 Audi A6 had been reported stolen April 26, police said.

Police Make $60K Pot Bust

Give Glen Cove Police credit for weeding out one big stash of drugs.  

Police arrested three men from Westchester, Queens and the Bronx Friday after the car they were in was found – thanks to Nassau Police K-9 units – packed with 41 pounds of marijuana.  

Police, who did not identify the men, said the marijuana had a street value of up to $60,000. More than $2,000 cash was also recovered.   

Boater Arrested After Collision
A Fort Salonga man was arrested after ramming his powerboat into a moored vessel in Northport Harbor early Sunday, Suffolk County Police said.    

Police charged William Tabert, 52, with boating while intoxicated after his 21-foot Malibu motorboat struck and damaged a 50-foot sailboat with four people aboard at about 12:05 a.m. Sunday.     

While both vessels suffered damaged, no one was injured, police said.    

Cops: Serial Purse Thief Caught
A Massapequa Park man was busted for stealing an 86-year-old woman's purse at Stop & Shop Sunday allegedly pulled the same stunt three other times in Freeport and Massapequa, Nassau Police said.

Margaret Smith was standing in the fruit aisle at Stop & Shop just after 1 p.m. Sunday, when Michael A. Hammond, 24, of Massapequa Park, took her purse out of her shopping cart.  

A fellow shopper spotted Hammond and screamed out for help. While Hammond got out of the fruit aisle, an undercover federal officer took him down before he was able to leave the store, police said.  

Police charged Hammond with four counts of fourth-degree grand larceny, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and second-degree escape.

Cops: Bank Robber Nabbed
Nassau Police arrested a Hicksville man in connection with a pair of bank heists, including one April 27 in Plainview.  

Evan Kerpen, 34, was charged Tuesday with four counts of robbery in connection with heists at the Bank of America on South Oyster Bay Road and a January bank job at the TD Bank on Old Country Road.  

The two banks are virtually next to each other, a short block apart on South Oyster Bay Road.
