No Serious Injuries as Ceiling Caves In at Plainview Centre

Although dozens of people were inside, no serious injuries were reported when a ceiling caved in Tuesday evening at the Lucille Roberts gym in the Plainview Centre shopping plaza.

One person was treated at the scene for a minor injury and three other refused medical treatment, authorities said.

Syosset firefighters responded in force to the call just after 6:30 p.m. to a report of a partial roof collapse at the shopping plaza, which straddles the border of the Plainview-Syosset fire districts.

About 70 people were inside taking a class when the ceiling came down, witnesses said. Many still dressed in work-out wear stood behind police tape as firefighters secured the scene inside.

The cause of the collapse was under investigation. Nassau County fire marshals and Oyster Bay building inspectors were on the scene.

Management at Lucille Roberts said the gym would begin work immediately on repairs and could be open again as early as Wednesday evening.
