Nor'easter Brings Further Damage to Plainview

Morton Village hit with outage, roads slick and dangerous. Plainview schools closed.

The Nor'easter brought additional misery to Hurricane-ravaged Plainview and much of Long Island, with brutal winds and snow cutting power to about 60,000 additional LIPA customers Island-wide.

Plainview schools are closed today. The Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School has lost power, Nassau County officials said. That means the county's emergency shelter located at the former high school is shut down Thursday.

Morton Village has lost power and ShopRite there is operating on a generator. Trio Hardware is operating, however. They have a full stock of storm-related needs and report hundreds of phone calls this morning from people in need.

Trees are reported down on Washington Avenue and near Plainview JFK High School.

The eastbound Long Island Expressway was closed at Exit 40 for an accident investigation Thursday morning. Some businesses in Plainview's industrial park, including a portion of Aeroflex, were without power.

"Old Bethpage was a disaster this morning," wrote Joe Nappi in a tweet to Plainview Patch. "Branches bent and broken, trees down and low-hanging power lines everywhere."

Please let us know if your street or neighborhood was impacted by this new storm, and how.

Patch is asking LIPA for fresh information on when the remaining area outages will be addressed.

We need your voices attached to this story. Also, direct questions to LIPA officials here.

Editor's Note: Please upload the latest storm damage photos here. Could someone upload photos of the damage along Washington Avenue? Near JFK? Thanks. jd

Manetto hills has not even seen a truck. There is no help in sight! There is new damage from the snow in robin court. Tree limbs are now hanging heavily on lines when they weren't before the snow. We need help, heat and power to our entire neighborhood! Lipa does not reach out to communicate or answer phones anymore. We feel forgotten!

Richfield St near Sunnside Blvd still out. When are we going to get some help? I was told by LIPA on Mon that we would have power by Wed when they checked on our street. I would like a straight answer. They took down the map where it showed where they are working. The light on Manetto Hill Rd and Sunnyside is still out. It is a very dangerous situation since that intersection is a busy one. Can't someone please help us

48 degrees inside on Melony Ave. Day 11. Where is Steve Israel. Joe, you should write a piece on how all our pols, den and rep, disappeared. Venditto is hiding. Of course, nepotism lives on in his family (son as new useless pol). And Mangano! Oy! Lover of photo ops. "Thank you, thank you Andrew. You may now stand up straight"

me too Sue, me too. We MIGHT be going to a friend's house later. I am praying we DO get our lights back on. My aunt heard on news12 that hickville and plainview are top priority. My block is almost like a ghost town. everyone is leaving except those with generators. Mom and I are at the Library. Then later we are praying we can get go home. I pray everyone gets their lights and heat soon!

Now I like Andrew Cuomo, but mom and I were d iscussing this the other day--we miss LILCO. They always did their jobs. There was rarely a time when there was miscommunication or no communication. This is really ridiculous!

My house is on Barry lane in oldbethpage. We have been out of power since last Monday when storm hit fortunately most of the homes on our street had no structural damage no major fallen trees or lines down. I don't understand why the homes on one side if street have been restored but not on our side. Thank you for your web and updates it is one ofi the few ways we can know what is going on. I have reported our outage several times to lipa via text and online but just get the standard "robo response". I hope that lipa has not forgotten our neighborhood. Please keep covering old Bethpage as well as Plainview so they eventually help us.

I live near you Jenn, off Sunnyside BLVD. We've been without power for 11 days. It would be nice if the LIPA customer service at least had compassionate people... A lady at the Library yesterday was complaining that they yelled at her. I am really sorry for your situation. It is actually colder inside than outside ...and if I remember after the storm you have to file a claim with LIPA saying that your child is special needs etc and needs to have meds refrigerated, etc and then they will send someone in the next storm to hook you up to the electric first. I don't know if they are still doing this or not, but it's worth looking into. I am really sorry, and I hope we all get lights and heat by tonight!

What I want to know is why are there the same number of crews working in Bassau County as Suffolk County when Nassau has 60,000 more homes without power. You can find this on their website. Where are they in Plainview. I am affected by the Sunnyside light. I saw them working on the lines 3 days ago but they never came back to finish.
Lady Samantha November 08, 2012 at 06:39 PM
We've seen trucks...they just leave. I live off sunnyside blvd. I don't understand why they say we are top priority if we aren't.
Lady Samantha November 08, 2012 at 06:40 PM
I'm around the corner from you--they told us the same thing. They don't really give a damn about us do they? I think we should all refuse to pay our bills until something i done about their communications or lack thereof!

Just checked outages on LIPA site. In TOB Plainview sticks out like a sore thumb. Joe, please use your investigative and journalistic abilities to find out why this is so. Is there something sinister going on here? I am not being paranoid. Where is all this damage in Plainview that is causing all these outages. I live behind the library.
Jeff S November 08, 2012 at 06:46 PM
Who is feeding Gov Cuomo his information he just said at his news conference that there are only about 100,000 outages in nassau and they are the ones who had water damage and must be inspected before power restored, did plainview just become ocean front property, another elected official with his head up his a--, new jersey got slamed harder than we did and and not as much power loss as we had just venting

Power went out on one side of Holly Lane (just off Washington, near Mattlin and the JCC) at 1am when a snow covered tree fell on the lines on Sherwood. Police came because the wires were live, but now we're afraid it's gonna take forever to get it back on since we're just an isolated block. This sucks.
Debbie Gershow-Lindell November 08, 2012 at 07:01 PM
Enough phone calls ans emails! LIPA knows where the lines are down. It is time for a demonstration at a LIPA office-or at Cuomo's local office-bring pictures of your children and grandparents so they can see who is freezing. Bring sleeping bags and refuse to leave until everything is fixed. Contact all media. Sound too radical? Maybe, but maybe we need to be in their faces (like the annoying little mosquitos that get noticed when they are in our faces) and remind them they need to step it up

Sylvia lane off old country rd in plainview has been without power since Monday oct 29 and we have not seen one electric truck in the area all the streets around us are out
Leigh Mertz November 08, 2012 at 07:19 PM
I am also on Richfield and Sunnyside. Four different neighbors have called LIPA and each of us had gotten a different answer. We have been told anywhwere from Wednesday to Tuesday the 13th. I don't trust any answer we get.
mona November 08, 2012 at 07:26 PM
Ed Mangano has been since 1 day after Sandy and he lives in Bethpage. Hey Ed,"can we stay with you?"
Ed E November 08, 2012 at 07:33 PM
I am starting to hear from a number of neighbors that LIPA is saying the 13th for our area

Shop Rite is open running on an emergency generator but they do not have any perishables. No fruit, veggies, frozen foods and believe the deli counter was closed though I didn't look as I was in and out (2pm). Yesterday I saw numerous out of state utility crews working on Manetto Hill Road and the area west of that. Didnt see any on my ride around a half hour ago. Also heard that if you got your power back then lost it you drop to the bottom of the list. Sadly there are many like that. Hopefully the warmer temps that are coming tomorrow will expedite the work that needs to be done.
Jon Levine November 08, 2012 at 07:47 PM
Like a few people have mentioned here I'm on the grid that includes Manetto Hill Rd., which lost its power at 2:30pm on the 5th. When I was home on Election Day, I spoke with the supervisor of an out of town utlities crew who was working down Main Parkway behind a house where a tree feel and took down power lines. They told me that once they fixed that project, our grid would be next. Well by Tuesday night everyone on that grid had their power. Of course with the storm I didn't expect that much work would be done yesterday, but they better not have forgotten who's next. I'm pretty sure my grid also includes the traffic light that's still down at the intersection of Sunnyside Blvd.

Morton Village South of Old Country Road is a disaster. No lights since last Monday. (11 days) All politicians have been notified, no answers or call backs. Lipa gives no info. We deserve better. Hope Drive is a thru street. Dark Roads, cold homes.
CONCERNED November 08, 2012 at 10:07 PM
As usual LIPA is full of Crap. They are saying they are restoring people who have been out the longest BULL! They are now working in Plainview to restore the people that lost power last night. REALLY???? Some people have never spent one day in the dark nor have they been paying hundreds of dollars a week in gas on a generator ,adding cost to do laundry, eating out etc...."They are working in your area -(PLainview)not my immediate area and possibly they might have you power on by Saturday.. "There are 27 people on your grid", so they basically said "TOUGH" because 27 people dont mean crap... Ths is BS ...Really!
CONCERNED November 08, 2012 at 10:13 PM
When we'll be there Call News 12 too
CONCERNED November 08, 2012 at 11:15 PM
Same thing Heather ,Violet ,and Azaela behind Fireside. 27 PEOPLE on the GRID. Called Politicians too. They dont care. When I did speak to one of them got a sob story about how they are in the dark too. Yeah Right! LIPA doesn't care either.
mona November 08, 2012 at 11:57 PM
I went home to shovel my darkened driveway on Netto Lane when 3 men from Lipa drove up in a car to tell me they were there to check my yard and my neighbors because someone called about downed wire. A WASTE OF MANPOWER! If you can send them out in a car to check downed wires of which there are thousands, then send them out in cars to bring back power to those out for 10 days.
NatetheGrate November 09, 2012 at 12:55 AM
Does this site even mention Old Bethpage unless it's part of a name that begins with Plainview?
unknownauthor November 09, 2012 at 02:08 AM
WHY IS EVERY SINGLE TOWN GETTING POWER BUT PLAINVIEW? WHAT IS GOING ON HERE??
Ellen Levine November 09, 2012 at 02:16 AM
I think instead of venting his anger (entirely justifiable)Gov. Coumo should appear at Lipa demanding to see how the work is being done! Someone needs to help us . We have lived on Myron rd. Since 1972 and we are always first out last one back in any power outage! Fining them will just cause a burden on all of us down the road in higher fees! Ellen levine
JOE November 09, 2012 at 04:53 AM
I have just been informed that there is going to be a massive rally on Monday in front of the LIPA offices on Old Country Road in Hicksville at 10 am. If anyone knows where to get the inflatable rat that you see at protests, We need that for Monday
Claudia Brown November 09, 2012 at 07:12 PM
Going on Day 12 for my house, off Haypath Road between Sylvia and Lent. There is a tree hanging from the wires and resting on the transformer, yet NO trucks have been in the area AT ALL. I did see 5 tree clearing trucks today, but they (and their workers) were all parked in the Plainview Shopping Center doing NOTHING! LIPA is giving us NO answers, there is NO accountability, and the entire neighborhood is OUT. First its by Thanksgiving, then its by Christmas and now its by Monday. I'll believe it when I see it!! - FrozenAndForgotten
