Plainview Fire Department Warns of Holiday Dangers

It's a festive season with live trees and holiday lights. Here are some tips to prevent a tragedy at the holidays.

Plainview firefighters say those festive holiday decorations, especially live trees and strings of lights, pose dangers to a home and its occupants.

Fire Chief Kevin Mertz issued a warning to area residents on the web site. Essentially, residents should use common sense and follow basic safety standards this holiday season.

Each year more than 400 residential fires are sparked by Christmas trees. On average, 40 deaths and 100 injuries result from those fires, according to the National Safety Council.

Pick a fresh, green tree whose needles bend and are difficult to pull off the branches. Look for fresh sap on the trunk.

Cut about two inches from the trunk. Place it in a strong stand with water. The tree stand needs to be filled with water on a regular basis.

Keep the tree away from sources of heat, especially fire places and radiators. Make sure the tree is placed away from an exit path. A tree should never be placed in a doorway.

Artificial trees can also pose hazards if they are not rated as fire resistant. Artificial trees sold with their own lights should have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label.

As for lighting, use indoor lights indoors and outdoor lights outdoors, and only purchase lights bearing the UL label. Strings of lights with broken or cracked sockets, loose connections or damaged wires need to be replaced.

Don't overload extension cords. Experts say use no more than three strings of lights on any single extension cord. Never run wires or extension cords under rugs.

Even fragrant trees that appear fresh to the touch can pose hazards. Firefighters say it's vital to never leave the tree lights on when you leave the house or go off to bed.
