Plainview Firefighters Called to Gas Leak

Incident on Winding Road required crews to dig through a foot of snow to reach hydrants.

Plainview firefighters were called to the scene of a gas leak Thursday after a tractor-trailer ruptured a line leading to an Old Bethpage business.

The incident occurred just before noon Thursday at MR BBQ on Winding Road in Old Bethpage. Firefighters  stretched a precautionary hose line while other crews worked to shut off natural gas to the building.

Meter readings taken inside the business were negative but another leak was confirmed by National Grid in a line leading from the street to the private service, firefighters said. An underground work crew was called to the scene.

Firefighters, under the command of 1st Deputy Chief Ross Dubner, were forced to locate several fire hydrants buried under the fresh foot of snow that had fallen overnight. Crews dug them out and hooked up hose lines. Firefighters also assisted National Grid workers in locating the shut-off valve in the street, also buried in the snow.

The scene was secured shortly after 1 p.m., firefighters said.
