Plainview Firefighters Evacuate Businesses After Restaurant Gas Leak

High levels of natural gas found in Chan's Garden and other area businesses on Old Bethpage Road.

The responded to multiple calls reporting a natural
gas odor coming from Chan's Garden restaurant at 710 Old Bethpage Road Friday morning.

Responding Plainview units  found high levels of gas coming from the restaurant just before 9:30 a.m., prompting police and fire personnel to evacuate the businesses in the north end of the shopping center, firefighters said.

No injuries were reported; the cause of the leak is under investigation.

Engine 951 secured a water supply and stretched one hose line. Then, firefighters forced the door to the closed business in order to gain access.

Inside, high levels of gas were detected and the gas service to the shopping center was turned off, firefighters said.

The Melville and Hicksville Fire departments were called to the scene along with personnel from National Grid.

Firefighters monitored all the businesses in the area of the restaurant until the gas levels were found to be safe.

During the operation the Hicksville, Farmingdale and Bethpage fire departments stood by at Plainview Station No. 1 on Old Country Road.
