UPDATE: All-Out Search for Plainview Man with 'Amnesia'

Authorities have launched a region-wide search for a Plainview man suffering from temporary episodes of amnesia.

Michael Savitsky, 45, disappeared in a grey Hyundai Accent sedan on Wednesday. Making matters worse, Savitsky rarely drives, said his wife, Jodi Savitsky.

"He rarely goes anywhere in a car and only goes places he knows nearby," she told Patch. "He doesn't really drive. He's never done anything like this before."

Jodi Savitsky said her husband was diagnosed with "transient global amnesia" which is described as a "sudden, temporary episode of memory loss." The episodes are not linked to more common neurological conditions such as epilepsy or stroke.

All day and into the evening Thursday, electronic signs reporting his disappearance were flashed to drivers along the Long Island Expressway.

Savitsky was last seen wearing navy blue shorts, a navy blue polo shirt and was driving the new Hyundai; it bears New York plate AJB-8416. He is described as white, about 5'-10" and 160 pounds. He has gray hair, blue eyes and speaks English.

Police say Savitsky may be traveling to Suffolk County and be in need of immediate medical attention.
