Car Strikes, Kills Plainview Woman

85-year-old Sylvia Rosenberg was fatally injured while crossing busy Woodbury Road Thursday afternoon.

A Plainview woman, attempting to cross Woodbury Road on foot, was struck and killed by an automobile Thursday afternoon, Nassau police said.

The victim, Sylvia Rosenberg, 85, of Plainview, suffered head trauma after being struck by a 2005 Acura, Nassau County detectives said.

She was transported to a local hospital where she died of her injuries early Friday morning, detectives said.

The crash occurred on Thursday at 5:41 p.m. when the Acura was making a left turn from Stratford Road onto the busy Woodbury Road thoroughfare. The scene of the incident is near the entrance to the ShopRite Supermarket parking lot and a row of stores on the north side of Woodbury Road.

Detectives report no apparent criminality is involved in the accident and provided no further details. The driver of the car was not identified.

Most definitely a terrible tragedy and accident. I'm aware that speed was not related to the incident. Having said that, it's important to note that that particular stretch of Woodbury Road, from the shopping center to Manetto Hill Road, is plagued with high speed driving and lack of enforcement from the Nassau County Police Department. The posted speed limit is mostly ignored, making crossing difficult for anyone, not to mention entering the roadway from adjacent neighborhoods. Please, slow down.

Yes, A horrible tragedy. Every few years there seems to be another pedestrian accident or death on this stretch of Woodbury Road. Perhaps finally, they will put additional lights with walking signals and the designated markings for walkers. Police should enforce it strictly.

The definition of STOP in the driving world is " the complete cessation of movement".Read More Sound like many people think STOP signs mean 1. Slow To Observe Police or 2. Slightly Touch On (brake) pedal. Time to go to traffic school online at www.oltep.com. Relearn what you forgot from Driver's Ed. Stay Safe

Stop means stop. Just like stop signs, where it seems like the local definition is to slow down toRead More 30 mph. You STOP, and look. Then go. I have seen kids having a tough time crossing Jamaica Ave because of this twisted definition of STOP. If anything, this is a good way to relearn what should of been taught in drivers ed. When I moved to Plainview, people at a stop sign would signal the driver that got there first to go. Now it's a race to the stop sign and fly by it to avoid having the other guy go first.
