Gary Melius, the owner of Huntington's Oheka Castle, was shot Monday afternoon at the historic hotel and catering hall, police said.

Melius was in a parking area entering his vehicle when he was shot in the head around 12:30 p.m., police said.

The gunman, who was reportedly wearing a mask, fled the scene.

Melius, 69, who lives at the castle, was transported by a family member to a local hospital. Melius is alert and in stable condition, police said.

The New York Post, citing law enforcement sources, reported that shooting may have been "a botched hit."

Melius, who is well-connected politically and has donated large sums to both parties, purchased the castle as a dilapidated property in 1984 for $1.5 million.

Today, the castle, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has 32 luxury guest rooms and suites, and hosts weddings, celebrations and public events. The castle's guest list has included Charlie Chaplin, Bill Clinton, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher.

Former Sen. Alfonse D'Amato tweeted Monday afternoon, "Please keep my dear friend Gary Melius in your prayers."

The USA Network show "Royal Pains" has filmed extensively at the estate over the past few years.

"Sending strength and hopes for a easy and fast recover to Gary Melius," Michael Rauch, the executive producer of the show, tweeted Monday. "He has been nothing but kind and generous with us."

Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

Would you or a family member have their wedding at Oheka castle now? Knowing this guy is a criminal who borrows from Peter to pay Paul and keeps a lot for himself. At $ 400 a plate I would go some place more respectable.

I've heard the most popular wedding now is the Weiner Special.

This guy is as dirty as the day is long. Just read a 1993 Village Voice article about his early life of crime and his later connections with corrupt PBA officials. Disheartening to know that he is so well connected politically. Doesn't say much for the morality of our elected officials. I guess what goes around comes around.
